The Tortoise Went West

We did a 35-day trip out west in our '78 Westy in June, and I wrote a story about it for the VW Club of America newsletter, the Autoist. You can read it here!

Re: Stuff at the Shop

Glad the propane worked! Hope he has a great running engine after all the trials and tribulations! (I can sort of relate to that! :D )

I like the lamp idea! Maybe I'll use an old flywheel for the base. :D I guess it would need to sit on a sturdy table, though!

Re: Don from Canton's Engine Rebuild Saga

I think this saga may finally be over. I lived with the funny knocking noise through last summer (2022), logging only a few thousand miles on the engine.

I tore it down AGAIN over this past winter to figure out what was going on.

Long story short, I came to the conclusion that the counterweighted ...

WTB: Stock Type IV Crankshaft for 2.0L (71mm stroke)

I think I'm ready to give up on my GEX counterweighted crankshaft and replace it with a stock unit. Apparently the flywheel mounting face is not parallel to the thrust face, and I get endplay that varies by .0015" depending on where the crank is positioned in its rotation. I don't make it to many LEAKOIL events being down here in the hinterlands of Canton, but I always enjoyed talking to Mark when I did. Grace and peace to Gail and family.

Don from Canton's Engine Rebuild Saga

It’s been over two years since I embarked on my engine rebuild journey, and it’s still not at an end. I figured I’d share a summary of the joys and sorrows to-date. (’78 Westfalia, 2.0L Type IV, hydraulic lifters, L-Jet fuel injection)

In October 2019, shortly after the Cleveland Oktoberfest, I ...

Borrow/Buy Fuel Pressure Regulator for L-Jet

My 1978 Bus FI started doing some really strange things yesterday. More testing to come, but I suspect the fuel pressure regulator. Does anyone have one they'd be willing to loan me for testing, with the option to buy if it solves the problem?
