I'll take the case!!! YEAH!
I am anxious to talk to you leak oilers on Thursday.
I will need some pointers as to where to source parts from and which parts to rehab.
Do I bore cylinders or buy new?
Mexican, Brazilian or Chinese?
Thanks
Chuck

Save the cam gear, SMBA Type IV guys whine about the available gears.

What condition are the rest of your internals- crank, rods, pistons, etc? Obviously you should have the heads done, but if the rest of the parts look good is there a chance you could hone the jugs and change the rings and bearings?

So, the main failure was the cam breaking? Was that caused by the lifter bore wearing out and the lifter cocking?

I believe the cause of the engine failure was a connecting rod not properly torqued.
one bolt appears to have backed out and the other broke. Both are bent from impact.
I am guessing the connecteng rod cap broke the lifter, cam and the case.
Lots of metal pieces in the case
Three of the cylinders have thier skirts broken or chipped pretty good.
By the looks of the heads I would say they don't have alot of miles on them.
They are however the square port.
I do have some 914 heads and cylinders but I have not taken a close look at thier condition.
Is it realistic to build an engine that can cruise at 70-75 mph and not overheat?

"Is it realistic to build an engine that can cruise at 70-75 mph and not overheat?"

I've done it for many years and 140k+ miles, most of it dragging 1000lbs of trailer. stock displacement 2L fully balanced and PROPERLY tuned.

It is pretty cool to see Bill pull away from people with his loaded Westy while pulling a full trailer.

Hello Fellow Leakers
I am posting new pictures of another engine case that I have now.
No holes in the case. Cam shaft is in one piece with no visible sign of wear when peaking through the lifter holes.
Rods and crank appear to be tight.
Pistons have some light scratching as do the jugs.
Got this engine from a teenager who was going to put it in a 914 he got from his dad.
Serial number has been polished off the engine.
Keeping in mind I am on a tight budget on this project I am thinking a bore or hone job, pistons and rings to match & possibly a valve job.
Your comments are welcomed.

I am also ready to start selling / trading parts off of the doner Camper.
Let me know how we can help each other out.
Thanks
Eric

That is a 914 engine and depending what parts are on/in it it will not be a good match for a bus.

I am interested in the Westy interior if it is available. The Z bed in particular. You can PM me or call my cell 440-476-9290.
