Bill
Can I bore the cylinders and put 2.0 pistons on it?
Why do you suggest replacing the cam? I have heard several people say that and I dont know why? Are you reccommending a cam with more duration or a stock cam?
Thank you for your time.

P&C's generally come as a set, so not sure why you would buy just the pistons, unless you have the pistons already....in which case you should have the cylinders also. Unless you mean boring the case, which is not necessary as the only difference in T4, 1.7/8 and 2.0 motors is the crankshaft. The cylinder skirt size is the same.

The camshaft is the weak link in T4 engines due to lifter geometry. The lifter doesn't ride square/center on the cam, and causes either mushrooming in the lifter, or excessive wear on the cam, groove, flat spot etc.

You should replace the cam and lifters together as a matched set.

The 914 parts are not good for a heavy TypeII. They are specd to move a light car rapidly, lots of power up high and not at the low end where you need it in a bus.

First,as far as I know you can not bore the 1.8 cyl for 2L pistons.(I may be wrong on this.)But it would be more costly than just replacing them. Second, from the info you have given,it sounds like the most usable parts that you have are 1.8.
If the 1.8 heads you have are from a carbed engine, they have larger valves than any other T4 engine 41mm In x 34mm ex,(except for the 2L 914).
As I mentioned, you could use the 914 case, all the parts will fit,but you will have the oil fill and dip stick issues that I mentioned.

As far as the square port heads, you will have a couple of issues. Exhaust. 1 year only heater boxes, although you can modify earlier to work. I have done this myself. Heater boxes are EXPENSIVE. The only aftermarket heaterbox eliminator pipes that I am aware of will NOT work on the square port heads.
Also the square port heads would have been from a hydrolic cam and lifter motor and the valves springs would change for a solid lifter and cam.
HP for the 1.8 carbed engine was 68hp@4200 RPM(DIN), HP for the 2L was 70hp @4200 RPM(DIN)
The big difference was toque. 92.4ft.lb @ 3000 RPM for the 1.8 (SAE) and 101 ft.lb @ 3000 RPM for the 2L
This was due mostly from the increase in stroke from 66mm on the 1.7 and 1.8 to 71mm on the 2L.
As mentioned before the cams and lifter in these motors wear out by 100K of sooner. The stock profile works fine, but there are some good choices for MILD upgrades.
I would recommend calling these guys for cam questions and for other parts.http://www.europeanmotorworks.com/
They also offer a 96mm p/C set for 1.8 crank and rod

Hello Bill
I called the european parts guys and they were very helpful
They are going to sen me a quote for parts
I split the 1.8 case last night and took them to the loacl carwas for some light degreasing.
This morning I found a hair line crack going from the base of one lifter housing to the adjacent lifter housing.
I will need to get that repaired.
I think this weekend I am going to start stripping the camper.
Thank you for all of your help.

Jorge and Javier are extremely knowledgeable about T4 engines. That's what they do. their prices will be fair. But MOST important is that they use the stuff they sell.
