Not looking very promising here Sean.
I think it is slowly donning on me why I bought new ones.

Even Chuck can't help me!westy66 wrote:Ask chuck
I'm a stock guy at heart, so I'll put a stock heating system back in place before running this bus. When I say "a" stock system it won't be the original 75-78 set up. I'm going to go with the 72-74 HE's and muffler. I've already found a set of 72-74 HE's. I have the flapper boxes, so all I really need are those connector pipes between the HE's and the flapper boxes. They're all the same 72-79. (correction they are not! See below) If the existing 75-78 boxes on the bus are good, we can save them for Howie.
Dan did a lot of mechanical work on this bus, but it still needs some help. I've got to do the rear brakes and new e-brake cables (hardware ordered), I also need a replacement AFM. I've got a middle seat from Chuck and I'll finish the inside panels. The rust repair panels are all ordered. I may order new window rubber, but don't want to get too crazy. Once I get the mechanicals straightened out at Dale's, I'll bring it home and start cutting, welding and grinding!
I'm just looking for a good working passenger bus to haul a bunch of high school rugby players.
Since it's already brown, it may end up doubling as a Brown's bus. Fergus and I are thinking of painting an old school version of the "elf" on the doors.

Re: The "Lurchmobile"
Connecting pipes from HB to flappers are not the same for 72-74 and 75-78. 79 is a 1 year htr box and the connecting pipes may be the same as 72-74. I will try to get some pics up. 79 has Vanagon sq port exhaust. 72-74 boxes can be easily modified to work on the 79 but not the other way.
Re: The "Lurchmobile"
Thanks Bill. I wrongly assumed 72-79 were all the same. Obviously on closer inspection they are not. Here's a diagram from the "busted bus" site. I need part #1 in this diagram. I need both the left and right pipes for the 72-74 set up. http://bustedbus.com/groot/w/OtherAssets2/t202410.gifwwebner wrote:Connecting pipes from HB to flappers are not the same for 72-74 and 75-78. 79 is a 1 year htr box and the connecting pipes may be the same as 72-74. The left side has what looks like a "wing" that connects to the engine for support while the right side pipe, (not shown in the diagram), doesn't have a "wing", but rather a bracket to hold it in place. New or used, in a word, these pipes are EXSPENSIVE!

Re: The "Lurchmobile"
By the way, have you ever checked out Wayne's Charlie Brown bus? It is very nice.

Re: The "Lurchmobile"
There are many different parts needed to convert to the early exchangers. Engine tin, alternator bracket, inlet and outlet pipes. German supply has a kit of the parts, it is $250+. You can find the parts at swaps easily if you know what you are looking for, I picked up some control boxes at Toledo last year for $10 that were in great shape.Six Volt wrote:Thanks Bill. Re: The "Lurchmobile"
Thanks Ted. I remember seeing those GS "kits" in the past. Wow, has the US dollar taken a beating or what!
Anyway, like you said, that kit shows what's needed. http://www.germansupply.com/home/custom ... 409&page=1
I've scrounged pretty much everything except those two HE to flapper boxes. I need the ones with the round bottoms.
Driver side.

Passenger side.

Re: The "Lurchmobile"
You might also try somebody like "Busted Bus" or one of the other fine used parts guys....

http://www.interstateusedparts.com/
I can't remember right off who the guy in Colorado is, but he would also be a good one to try.
Also VDubTech in Syracuse,NY would likely be the best one to ask first.
