65 Westy
Re: 65 Westy
Bob,
new clutch, pressure plate, & throw out bearing, and new cable. It is adjusted...
Ken,
engine is back out and re-checked the fan. It looks ok. Everthing sounded ok with the stock fan shroud. Only started hearing the vibration/rattling sound when I switched over to the doghouse cooler setup. The generator does spin ok, but I do feel some drag. The generator pulley does seem to have a little give on the back half, maybe the key or keyway is worn. It also seems to be a little bent. Sure wish I had the setup to run the engine out of the bus, would be easier trying to narrow things down than putting the engine in and taking it out 3 times. Guess I needed the practice!

Re: 65 Westy
No set-up really needed....I run engines all the time on the garage floor with a gas can, battery, wood blocks and a couple wires to hot wire it
If a guy named SixVolt doesn't have your generator pulley, I might, let me know.

Also the bus bellhousing I sold you helps also.Captkirk wrote:No set-up really needed....I run engines all the time on the garage floor with a gas can, battery, wood blocks and a couple wires to hot wire it![]()
Re: 65 Westy
Here's a set-up I threw together a few years ago to run my engines. I bought a heavy duty engine stand from the auto parts store and cut the bell housing off an old Beetle transmission case and bolted it to the engine stand. Then I mounted a lawn mower gas tank, on/off switch and pushbutton for starting. Inexpensive and it works great.

Oh, I forgot you need an old transmission or to buy an adapter off of Rickvwrick69 wrote:Also the bus bellhousing I sold you helps also.Captkirk wrote:No set-up really needed....I run engines all the time on the garage floor with a gas can, battery, wood blocks and a couple wires to hot wire it![]()

Re: 65 Westy
Nice meet some of you today at Tune Up Day. After we got home, I decided to go out to the garage and tear the generator apart since I've never had one apart. The bearings were a little dry so I worked some grease in to them and they spin very quietly. Then I decided I would put it all back together and back in the bus to see if it made any difference. As I was putting the fan back onto the generator shaft, I had not noticed before due to the accumulation of dirt & grease that there was a crack around the center hole of the fan. With just a wiggle, the whole center of the fan fell out. Mystery solved!
I've got friend who has a spare fan, it may take me several days to get it and get the engine back in. I am assuming that it would not be a good idea to put the stock fan from the 1500 in to the doghouse fan shroud?
Thanks to everyone for their assistance, and to Josh for the new pulley!

Re: 65 Westy
Nice meeting you today, still trying to figure out who was telling me about plastics and resin repairs.
The dual port fans are a few millimeters wider than single port fans. I attached a 1600 dp doghouse fan on my generator and put it in a sp shroud and it didn't spin freely. I had to use a 1500 sp fan. This was during my engine building escapades of this winter.
That being said, and I'm sure a lot more well versed folks will chime in, I'd assume a sp fan in a doghouse shroud would cool a bit less efficiently due to the decrease in airflow volume provided by the thinner sp fan.

Got my new curtains put in. Came from a woman in England who advertises on the Samba. They are an exact match to the originals. Now we can go camping!
