Re: Just bought a 71 Super out here in corncob land

Post by blue71 »

SO the gas door opening cable on the 71 super is broken so it doesn't enter the car (it still can open the door if the trunk is open). After looking around I am NOT spending $90 for a two year only release, nor am I opening the trunk everytime I need to get gas if there is a door present.

I found a cable stop to use as a crimp and some braided cable to make an extension that goes into the car. A foot was more than enough for my needs, thus I'll need to trim it down.

I just have to figure out how to attach the original handle I found in the trunk to the end of the repaired cable.

Total cost of my jerry rigged engineering fix: under $2

I also installed the new front bumper and driver running board in the constant drizzle we have here. The parts came from one of the more low key club guys out here who has a sweet collection of VWs and parts.

The balled aluminum foil (soft enough to not scratch the metal) and coke chrome polish idea works with water or mountain dew. As long as a liquid lubricant is present and the finish isn't utterly toast things clean up well. I tried it on the old front bumper with poor results, but the driver mirror looks very presentable with water and aluminum foil.

I need to touch up the faded yellow somebody painted it. The original color is kansasbeige.

Need a shop vac and probably the electrical portion of the starter switch if checking the starter yields it to be a good one. Battery checks out at 605amps and 12.4 volts.

Yay supers.

Yep. Electrical portion of switch. Shipping it east in a week to either fix some more or sell. I dislike supers even more now.
