Someone cobbled up a front tranny mount on this car. Can anyone identify from pics and numbers what is right/wrong here? I wonder if the extra stuff is to reinforce a rotted mounting bracket?







Tranny SN A0699492, not a split case, regular looking 6v swing axle. I can't find this number in any tranny SN listing.

That's what it looks like to me.

Cut that shit out and weld in a new mount.

He pulled the engine, it has a 12v flywheel/cl on it and the bellhousing has not been clearanced for 12v, so it must be a '67 tranny. The listings have different PNs for '62 and '67 tranny mounts, does anyone know what the difference is? The pictures look virtually the same so there must be a spacing difference of some type.

He has a '66 1300 decklid on this car and would like the correct '62 lid. Does anyone know what the difference is? The listings show they are different but the '66 lid fits perfect. I'm assuming it's the bulge near the license light? The PO said the correct original decklid is somewhere in the Cleveland area but did not elaborate.

I've owned a 58 and a 66 nearly back to back and had to answer a ton of questions about parts interchanges.

I remember this stuff from parting them out because they were rotten SOBs:


58-63 t handle lock and small license plate light
64 it's own special decklid
65-66 push button lock (66 has 1300 logo instead of Volkswagen logo script)



Well now my memory is really kicking into overdrive. I have a red over blue or primer 58-63 decklid somewhere in the barn that's straight with one tiny ding in it to the left of the latch. Don't remember about the hinges or springs, but think they were good. No plate light though. Sean told me to save it for a rainy day before when I posted photos in my apartment hunt thread.

Mounts are dimensionally the same, stud size changed, I think.

OK, what other tranny was swing axle and 12v, unless it was built from a variety of parts?

Look, I'm willing to admit I don't know every detail about Beetles, that's why I ask questions. I did own a bunch of them back in the '80's, but there's not much I remember from the 80's......

'68 is 12V swingaxle.

'67 has short splines, long end castings and is still 5x205

This Bug seems to be a hodge podge of parts, why would the trans be any different.

Right, what I meant to say was, "What trans has 12v, swing, and wide5". I know about the longer axles and bolt patterns, I didn't look at his to see if it was long or short, and I don't know if you can put W5s on a '68 long axle. I had a '68SA trans in one of my rails.

Brad- I told him to slow down and not buy anything right away, but he's a "gotta have it" kind of guy. I took a long time buying all of my classic cars.
