Might want to verify that.
First freeway flier generally is referred to for splitties, (for most intents and purposes) where you lose the RGBs.
Secondly, to mate a 091 with a 1600 takes a fair amount of work.
Different nose, different bell housing, different flywheel, different trans mount.
It can be done, but most don't. (Unless he paid like a grand from a rebuilder) May have misspoke, a meant that it has an IRS with taller 4th.

Never believe what you are told with the old VWs. Verify it for yourself.
(And if you have the heads off measure the stroke)

thanks for the info Mike, I'm learning things very quickly with this machine.
When I was under the bus I saw the trans and it has 091 stamped in it, and it has 6 ribs.
the engine parts do look new, carb, generator, oil fill. the engine looks ok, its a bit oxidized from sitting though I think

Good deal.
If you decide this van isn't for you , I would be interested in transaxle

"When I was under the bus I saw the trans and it has 091 stamped in it, and it has 6 ribs."
If that's the case, someone put a lot of effort and or $ into that transaxel. If you say that you figured the GTI to be worth $500,then you did good. The trans is worth that or more. Not sure why someone would go to that trouble for a stock 1600. You may want to ask more questions about the motor. Stroked? Bigger bore? Just a note here,68-71 stock trans was not supported at the rear (bell housing),if this is an 091 they would have had to swap the bell housing to the 68-71 to accomodate the 1600 flywheel and starter. If you ever pull the motor,be sure to support the trans, even disconnect the shift rod at the nose cone.

Re: What the heck did I get myself into??? 1971 Weekender!
Thanks!
I think I did well with the extras that I found with the bus:
Rear hatch bug screen
3 Instrument clusters
all new cables
some other random trim parts.
now with this info you are telling me, I really think I did well.
I bought the GTI for $500, put another $500 into it to get it on the road (hood, fenders, bumper, headlights) drove it almost 3000 miles for work (~$1500 mileage check) removed the leather and 17" wheels with great tires for my jetta.
I took ~$6-800 worth of wheels and tires and $300+ worth of interior out, I feel I did quite well

I was going to say the same thing but....wwebner wrote:"When I was under the bus I saw the trans and it has 091 stamped in it...Not sure why someone would go to that trouble for a stock 1600. You may want to ask more questions about the motor. Stroked? Bigger bore?

I figured if the info about the trans was right, then the info on the engine probably was too.vrboten1 wrote: I also determined I have a 091 Trans in there, PO told me just now that it has

I'm sitting in front of my computer in the Corvette Plant in Bowling Green, KY.
I spend lots of money while I'm away so I have stuff to do when I am home! lol
just paid for this piece today. I'll get to the door ASAP!
