Over the holidays I figured out how to take the cylinder out of the lock I got, but it took forever since some rust covered the set screw. It's rekeyed to match the ignition . Not sure what the other 4 VW keys on the ring operate for sure so I don't lock it. Folks got 2 feet of snow over the course of a few days, so its a bit inaccessible in the yard.
The poptop is being sewn by some Amish master craftsmen from a template Keith B. was generous enough to provide.
I'm looking for a driver side internal wood piece, or a good idea on how to create one. Also searching for the outer 3 prong plug that isn't rusty. I have an internal junction box housing and a really long extension cord thing that looks like it may be VW.
Looking for a rear hatch with less rust in the window lip as well.
Are the hinges for doors and on the cabinets in two orientations? I have a few half ones that don't go together the right way and was curious.
I think the SO42 bed will be able to support me, only time will tell.
I found some nice bluish grey suede type cloth to cover the bed and such in, with a light grey/white vinyl as well to make some inserts. Curtain material will be a blue plaid style I think. Mom does a lot of sewing so I'll try to learn from her/help out with things if I can.
The fiberglass roof rack isn't attached, just sitting on top. Does anyone know the right type of screws needed to do this? I know there are a few long ones with some sort of rubber spacer needed near the rear. The front has some holes, perhaps bolts?

Nick,
You may want to contact Dan Canalos "Dan" in Mitawanga. He lives not far from Wakeman, near the intesection of routes 6 and 61. He has a pristine 71 Westy that would be worth taking a look at and would probably answer all of your questions or you could give him a call at 440-967-9006. He a real helpful guy.
Ken

My bus is a 71 also, if you want to take a look. The luggage rack on back is sheet metal screws with the rubber spacers. Thicker spacers at the front I believe, thin washer type at the rear. I may have that reversed though. Any help, let me know.

Thanks guys. I'll probably wind up bugging you for photos or to stop by for a visit when I determine when I have free time thanks to my crazy schedule this last semester.
We got an out of state inspection done. Thankfully we were able to get a person from a dealership to come out to the homestead since getting it running without stalling hasn't happened yet. Eventually it will though. I swear.

Here is a photo of the front seat in the two tone scheme I was talking about. The black halfmoon on the bottom is dirt or something. I should be able to get it to out with some chemicals.
I don't know if it was recovered sometime in the past or what. I've only really seen black and brown early bay seats. Could it be from an earlier bus, or am I nuts?

I don't recall the bus seats ever being like that from the factory. I would say aftermarket or not original seats.

Thanks for the seat input Mark. I'll try to see when I'm free to get your glass to you soon.
Today I stopped by to see Kirk and got my tent poles repaired. Let me tell ya, he did an awesome job! He made a special tool for working on the ends to get the holes back in shape and everything.
And Sean, not once did he need safety glasses
This summer after I get a welder I'm signing up for the CKWA

Now I have a headache rack of the right veneer, however there is a chip in it on the front. Ah well, better than the wrong color stuff right? (which I somehow have 2 of)

Just keep at it Nick. Right or wrong, as long as it's functional, and you can live with it, It'll be 'good to go'!

I have pretty much two or three of everything in the 72+ veneer, just need the main factor: time to put it all together. That and I need to be able to get it onto a trailer for a trip to MI to have some metal work done, that's a long story but worth it. Have a rear hatch with less holes coming in from a friend in MI on goodvolks for a spare cot I have laying around once we have time to meet up. The bed and cabinet are in, no doors on them though due to my hinge bag being in a box in a box in a box somewhere. The jumpseat and icebox are just sitting in it, with a few boxes of randomness surrounding them. Need to pull the upper cot with the hole in the fabric and replace it with the good one that came from Keith B. I'll be getting a few door seals and such soon after shipping out part of my wheel collection that I didn't like. Have to find an external section of the electrical system, and how to make a panel for the driver side long wall. Need to get a seal to install the glass I had shipped from Randy, also swap a jalousie window out of the sliding door for one that opens/closes easier. Then try to figure out why the sliding door sticks when trying to open it and finish rekeying all the locks to be the same. I'll be content with the mismatch for awhile, after all it was originally gutted with a homemade bed. Figuring out what to do for a floor would be good too, especially the color laminate flooring. The cherry at Home Depot looked good, but way too much coin. Probably make a run to Marcs and poke around to see if their selection fits my tastes next time I get leave from the magical mitten. The yellow vinyl will be covered in blue/gray suede like material, with hopefully some inserts of light gray to match the front seat covers (if I can talk family into it, else, yellow it is.) Curtains will be blueish plaid. I can be a picky punk sometimes... That and pull the engine and swap the gas tank after getting together with Tom, ObsoleteGerman, for a better shape tank.
Got the custom poptop canvas from the local Amish, weatherproof, made exactly like the template I provided them. Will be checking to see their cost if they would be willing to make more of them for us all if less than the "major outlets."
Any suggestions on insulation for between the wood and wall, or just not worry about it due to water collecting there?
I have a lot to do still, spring break here I come. My spring break is in late February, looks like I'll be having a blast!
