What the heck did I get myself into??? 1971 Weekender!

Hey all, new here,

Jason from MI, this is my first aircooled VW and my first VW older than a MK1 GTI!

A few weeks ago I saw this picture on Facebook,

And thought I would kinda like it.

So I worked out a deal, and traded the GTI for it!

And something different followed me home!

It runs well, but it's very rusty. I will definitely be honing my rust repair, body work and welding skills.

The worst of it is the slider track for the door is pretty much gone. :(

Well I dug into the non existent brakes today. I'll be replacing all of the lines, hard and rubber, the master cylinder, both calipers and the rear cylinders. Not what I thought I needed to do, but the fonts are both seized, and there is a leak somewhere in the back. . I also welded a hinge into my gas pedal since it was flopping on the floor. I drove it around the yard, the non sick front seats put me into the roof, it's definitely a different feeling to drive it.

Alicia came over and helped me clean it up

Funny head liner, it needs to come down

New ignition switch installed, since this thing came with no keys, no switch, nothing!

Up to date now,

my brake parts showed up over the course of last week, and I was able to do the work on Saturday.

I replaced the hard lines, the rubber lines, the calipers, the wheel cylinder and the shoes/pads.

I recycled some MK1 Parts

Image

I found some new (but really old) shocks in a bin in the bus, I figured while I was under there, I might as well replace the old ones

Image

I haven't worked on drum brakes in a LONG time!
Image

ooh, shiny (all I had was wheel paint!!)

And the crusty driver side:

well,it certainly looks like you've got yourself a project there. It runs, the engine sounds fine. Looks like your have a handle on the brakes. And apparently,
you still have place to jack it up :) AND,you can't sleep it a GTI  Welcome, and good luck with your project.

Welcome. Looks like a fairly solid bus, especially if it is a good runner. Bring it to Kombis on Kelleys this year so we can see it in person.

Head down to Columbus show this weekend and fill your trunk with bay window parts for the project.

Thanks!
I tore all of the nice stuff out of the GTI (leather, stereo, black trim and wheels) to put in/on my jetta TDI.

I got my $500 out of it ;)

the frame is pretty solid, only one part of the C channel is rusted on the bottom, it looks like it might have been used to jack the bus up at one point, bent it/cracked paint and allowed rust to propagate.

Almost the whole floor is shot, front and rear, I can't open the slider or else it will fall off, and pretty much the bottom 8" of body is bondo or holes.

I'm not sure whats going to happen with this, but i want to see how I like it after I fix the front floor and slider.
