Ken's 68 Single Cab

I found this 68 SC about 15 years ago parked next to a garage in Westlake. After locating the owner, we struck a deal and I hauled it away. The engine didn't run and it had no brakes so Reg and I trailered it back to the shop at Meister Rd.
It had a 1600 DP in it that turned over, so after a tune up and carb rebuild, to my surprise, it ran quite well.

Then on to the brakes. I replaced the hard lines, hoses, wheel cylinders, one brake drum and maybe the linings, not sure. At the time, I had just moved into a new house so I used it for hauling materials for the landscaping and other chores for the next few years. After that it just sat around the shop like an orphan while I worked on other projects like the 63 SC, Vegas Bus, etc.

After seeing Rick (TRL's) 69 SC project, I started to get interested in the 68 again and thought it was time to bring it out of the closet after all these years. It still runs runs good and even stops!
It has the typical rust issues: floor boards, apron under the windshield, doglegs but the underside is still solid.
This is the way I found it 15 years ago. I have no plans of doing a restoration, just going to drive it and make some minor repairs and use it as a driver/workhorse.

Nice to see it on the road again after all these years. Even nicer to see that you plan on using it for what it was designed to do.

Don't forget to add the obligatory hauling wood/logs picture

Notice the lawnmower gas tank. I installed that after I found out the gas tank was leaking. I drove it with that tank for years. Bill recently located a good used original gas tank so that will going in soon.

Thanks Rick, you inspired me to get this thing back on the road. As far as I can tell, it is pretty much all there. If you need to ckeck something out, feel free to contact me at any time and stop by.

Time to take a good look at the underside. There is a lot of surface rust but the frame rails, cross members and jacking points look pretty good and are structurally sound.

I remember replacing the CV joint some years ago and probably only drove it less than 1000 mi., so they should be good to go.

Doglegs are a little ratty, the wheel wells are rusty but structurally sound. Good enough for a driver.

Need to clean and straighten out the engine compartment and wiring.

The gas tank on the top was leaking badly when I got the bus. I drove it around for a few years with a 1 gallon lawn mower gas tank mounted in the back of the bed. The driving range was limited to about 20 miles before I had to refill. Lurch tried to fix it but it was rusted so thin that it was beyond repair.
Bill located the bottom tank from Art Brow's stash and got it from Dutch. It looks to be in good shape so I decided to try it out. It's out of a later Bay bus so I had to make some minor modification but it should work out well. Now the driving range should be 250-300 miles on a full tank. :D
