Hans and Olaf

Post by blue71 »

I work a little here and there for family friends, etc so I have a lot of free time to play with my parts and vehicles this summer.

I decided to pull the engine from Hans, 71 bug, last night to see how everything was doing. It's never been out in the six or seven years I've had him. Lucky thing I did, the upper drive side engine to transmission bolt wasn't there  Time to find one in my menagerie of stuff. Saw some surface rust starting where black paint was peeled, looks like steel brush and black paint will be on the to do list as well.
I'll probably also use him as a test bed to check out my spare engines since I can't seem to get a trashed transmission I have apart to make into a stand instead of a table like the other case I had. Anyway the bearing and plate/clutch look good so now it's time to wrestle a spare out of the barn to slip in. More than likely I'll start with the engine I was thinking of putting Webers on because I know it runs, at least a year and a half ago it did :|

As for Olaf, my mom's name for the 70 bus, I need to find a piece of stainless to turn on a lathe to replace the center sections of the engine lid hinges. I've heard the aftermarket hinges are bad from reading and a few volks here. Besides, it saves $$ and gives my dad and I some bonding time. Would anyone know the diameter of the pin, or what book to look in? I don't have calipers or a micrometer to check it out myself. Also, which would be better, tapping out with a hammer and nail/drill bit, or drilling out the old pin?

Then it will be time to figure out why the horn doesn't work. I hope it's just a bad horn and not bad wiring.

Hey Nick, it was good to talk to you at Bill's. Since you have the engine out, I'd post some pics. I've found a lot of experienced guys on the site can point stuff out they see at a glance that you can handle while the engine is out.

I've also heard the aftermarket bus engine lid hinges are crap, but I have no personal experience.

If you can't figure the horn out, call Kyle.

I went to my sister's place in Lorain to help with a few things and to upload a few shots. I also get to try to fix the alarm in my truck so it doesn't arm itself after a minute. Time to replace the valet switch...

Worked on scraping dirt, rust and paint off the pan during the week and weekend. Wound up using three cans of black rustoleum to coat everything. The pans will need replaced in a few years. The PO screwed in some patches, on some pinholes, one of which took off a bit of the tip of my thumb when brushing. I'll get some photos up when I'm where the web is fast.

Hans Engine

Post by blue71 »

Alright so the pan is now black, but thanks to slow internet still no photos. I got my spare engine in. Its a dual port built on a dual relief Type 3 Universal case. I didn't pull the heads off to check the diameter of the jugs, but my guess is 1600. It has some chrome tin and a degree pulley, looks kinda stupid since it's peeling, but oh well. I put on the merged header with a stainless Phatboy muffler, then tried to get it running.

No gas squirts out when the pump outlet line is disconnected so I'm guessing the fuel pump seals/diaphragm dried from sitting. It starts up with a shot of starting fluid, but is starved since the pump is dead. Now I get to pull it and order an alternator style one. While I'm at it, might as well replace the intake boots and maybe dig through my parts for that blasted piece of rear tin.

I've not really worked with the bus besides check the wiring and search for info about hinge diameter.

So which vehicle are you bringing to Kelleys, Nick? Oh wait, I should have posted this at the KI link. Nevermind.

Hans update

Post by blue71 »

Hans runs great with a different fuel pump. I still need to find the shorter pushrod for my new alternator one. I have af ew exhaust leaks on the header and phatboy, probably because I made a flange gasket with muffler sealant... I limped to Agney's to see why I was running rough, well, I crossed plug wires so at least it was a simple fix.
I noticed a big difference in acceleration going from the 67 H block I had to this Universal T3 AS41 spare engine.

I'll be putting the horn on the Olaf today or tomorrow hopefully.

I put on a used horn that we figured out that works. It didn't. I found my Bentley manual and the fun began. After laying underneath it for a while I was able to get the right angle to see that the ground wire was off the bottom of the column. I finally wound up using a screw driver and one finger to clean the spade connections and then plug them together. It works now thankfully.

Good job Nick. Having a horn that works becomes a real necessity, when you need it most!

I've found cleaning the contacts under the button on the steering wheel is also a good idea. I think WW sells, (for lack of the exact term), "a contact kit" for the contacts under the button. I swapped mine out a few years ao on my beetle and have had a working horn ever since. Not sure if the bus horn buttons have the same set up. My bus horn is working, so I haven't taken it apart yet.

Those old VW horns are pretty bullet proof. People think their horn is bad and it's almost always the contacts. Good luck on the rest of the project.
