1965 Beetle

Post by 72westie »

Well, I finally got some work done on my Beetle I bought back in January. I went over to 21Windows' house a couple of weeks ago and had him help me reassemble my motor that we had split apart months earlier. I just got the tin back from being powder-coated late last week and got a couple of pieces installed tonight. There are still some other pieces I need to paint before I re-install them. Thanks Bill W for the new tin screws.

She now runs and drives after about a 26 year hibernation. Woohoo! :D

After screwing around with fuel issues for the last couple of months, I think I have this thing sorted out now. (I Hope!) I was getting rust/crap out of the tank and clogging up my pump and carb. Putting in a fuel filter helped to catch the debris before the pump, but also left me needing towed as it plugged solid with sh%t. I pulled the tank out a couple of weeks ago and used some straight Muratic acid in it and now she looks purdy inside.

While up at the Yipsi show, I purchased a $2.00 rebuild-able fuel pump that was tied up. After pulling it apart and cleaning it out, it seemed to work. The old pump on my Beetle has been giving me fits recently where it acts like it has been losing its prime while driving, which leaves you along the side of the road when this happens.

Last night I got some time to screw around with the car and pulled the old pump off that I had rebuilt last year. I took the top cap seal/diaphragm (sp?) from my old rebuilt one and put it in the $2.00 pump to replace the old screwed up on and presto! I have put about 30 miles on her and she hasn't skipped a beat yet. Hopefully that is the end of the fuel issues.

I hope you didn't leave it in too long. Years ago I was cleaning glass telegraph insulators in a 50/50 Muratic/water solution in a metal pan, and left it in too long. It cracked my insulators, ate through the pan, and into the concrete garage floor, turning it into sand. Muratic is powerful stuff.

Congrats on getting her running. I was just in the same boat with my '65 beetle. Mine's a lot rougher than the pic, but now it runs, so It's all good!

That acid is some nasty stuff, it really burns the hands and there may be an area of concrete that is now deformed

She seems to be working good, I plan on putting some more miles on her tomorrow. I had a guy stop bye the shop yesterday and check it out, he left his name and number and wants a price for it. Now I have to figure out if I want to keep it or try and sell it and get me a Single Cab...
