Re: 1957 Oval
Dealing with rugby has been a challenge. Baltimore, Washington, Notre Dame, Elkhart Ind, Cincinnati and many points in between has severely limited my VW activities. It all ends (finally) this Friday, June 1 in Columbus with Fergus's team playing for the State title against Cincinnati Moeller. Fergus is only a JV sophomore, so win or lose, this game is not the end of his world. That said, traveling has been a great experience for him. in any event, I'm back to VW's on Saturday, June 2.
So we got back from the playoffs and I thought I better try get something done today. Not much, but I finally got the Oval back on the ground after the tranny fix. Not sure if it really worked. I may have hockey stick connectivity issues, but I'm happy with how it's coming along.
Got the rear wheels back on with those pesky "grease slinger" channels in place. If you don't know, don't ask, major PAIN!

Worked on it in the unending HEAT. (Note the (bus) driveway LEAKOIL stamps!)

"W" decklid & "Pope" nose in place!

Love that photo of your 59 Westy and 57 Beetle in front of your garage/pub. Feels just like you're back in the 50's.

Re: 1957 Oval
Slow going on these vent wing windows. I'm using WCM rubber with WW replacement vent wings.

So a lot of LEAKOIL veterans have always told me to "take care of the tank" as in fuel to avoid problems from rust and other contaminants. We're still an industrial hub, but has anyone noticed how old radiator shops are dropping like flies?
I decided to go down to Klein Radiator on West 50th & Lorain Ave. in Cleveland. Klein's has been there since the 1910's and it shows. It's totally old school.

Came out nice.

Got to figure out the color of the original oval tanks.

F-r-u-s-t-r-a-t-i-o-n. Yea, that's it. These window "assembly" jobs are a pain. It's taken me a good two weeks to get to the last point where I put in the sliding glass! That's supposed to be the EASY part! It's not. 3 hours today and no go! Back at it tomorrow or it's time to call LURCH!
Vent wing rubber is a challenge, but I got it in!
You've got to kind of get everything together at once, window glass, felt, mounting brackets, bolts, rubber trim, mounting screws, so it all goes in right. It took me a number of tries, but it came together.

Now this piece is a p-a-i-n! I can't get the channels right and the lower mount right to get the damn glass in! Really frustrating. Those channels are on an angle as they go up into the door. It's really hard to keep the glass in the channel as you push it up and then try to mount the lower bracket. I can seem to get the bracket but not the glass. This is hard. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

That color and paint job is really nice and is perfect for a German car.Six Volt wrote:

Before I go back to the window frustration, I realized the rear bumper mounts on this beetle were shot and needed replacement. Q: Why didn't I notice that before I mounted the fenders? A: Because I'm a rookie and wasn't looking!
Dale had a set of -'67 down "pork chops", at least that's what some people call them, so I grabbed them. I did a little modification as the replacement part is more "universal" that oval "correct", but it came out "ok". I'm "piss poor" at welding and grinding, but I do get stuff to hold so I guess that's all that matters.
Fenders back off.

Not pretty, but bumper mounts replaced.
