Moped Receiver V 1.2

Post by Mike Kever Kombi »

Well with her moped I needed a way to get the thing to and fro. While it fits inside the van rather splendidly, it leaves not very much room for the camping stuffs and 3 dogs. So I figured this thing only weighs like 160 pounds so I can probably fit it on a cargo cargo from Harbor Freight....

Or for the extra coin they have a motorcycle carrier....

And it is high quality harbor freight isht, what could go wrong?

The little Tomos can just fit in the cargo carrier with some finagling and heavy petting.

With that decided, I needed a 2" receiver. Once again Harbor Freight to the rescue. They sell a 2" receiver bumper mount....

Now obviously I can't just bolt this to the bumper and call it a day, so I busted out the crayons and made some pretty drawrings...

Armed with my new found enthusiasm, my crack drawing and a pocket full of cash I headed down to the metal mart and picked up the metal I needed for this little endevor. Got the bumper receiver on sale and my super saver coupon for $18, and 60 bones for the steel.

When I got it home, I heated the 1/4" flat stock with the torch, put it in the vice, and bent a 90* radius on 2 pieces. Since I was going to use the 3 holes in the frame, 2 for bumper, and 1 for who knows. I had to add spacers to account for the extra space the bumper takes. Then added the angle piece to strengthen. I also had to zip off the tie down on the left side of bumper to make this work.

I then bolted them into the bumper to get my spacing right, and welded the 2" tube to the brackets.

After the tube was on, I measured center and added the step receiver to the bottom of the tube.

I wanted to tuck the receiver under the bumper a little more, but I am as far back as I can go with the exhaust set up I have.

Don't be a D bag and tell me how the van will never be able to haul anything with a 2" receiver blah blah blah. It is for a cargo carrier to haul a moped, not tow a 30' trailer, heavy equipment or pulling tree stumps

I don't think the moped will fit on the first one. I have the aluminum version and it is too small. Measure your moped before you go. I ended up buying the motorcycle one ( like the one Marla has). It is indeed Harbor Freight quality  I am going to make some modifications to it over the winter but it will work well enough to get to KI and back ;) BTW I had a 20% off coupon which you should be able to get on line or off of the flier at the store.

The counter weight might keep the front wheels from rubbing now

Been there, decided it was in good hands and my skills were not needed, chose to be at the ready for any more urgent mechanical issues that may arise.

And what a wise decision that turned out to be.
